WATERLOO -- A nonprofit organization is working with natural health experts to spread the message about
holistic healing methods.
The Iowa Health Freedom Coalition is hosting the Iowa Health and Wellness Expo, Sat., Aug. 7 at the YWCA
in Waterloo. The coalition is a nonprofit volunteer organization of holistic health care educators, practitioners
and consumers seeking to legally protect access to the natural healing arts. It is a branch of the National
Health Freedom Coalition.
"Our goal is to invite people who have little or no experience in alternative health care to come in and see
through hands-on experience," said Larry Hanus, coalition president.
Other organizations have hosted similar events across the state, and Iowa Health Freedom hopes to
introduce similar expos in other communities throughout the year to "develop grass-roots support for this
initiative."
"The widespread and consumer use of natural health care methods are well recognized, but our laws don't
reflect that," Hanus said. "The definition of most states medical practice acts can technically define practicing
some of these natural methods as being under the scope of practicing medicine and thereby illegal."
Medical doctors are required to provide a license to practice, but many natural methods do not have the same
licensing procedures.
The expo will feature keynote speaker Diane Miller, the legal and public policy director of the national coalition.
Miller is also a national lobbyist who has testified before the White House Commission on Complimentary
and Alternative Health Care and provided legal defense for alternative health care practitioners.
Rep. Dan Boddicker, R-Tipton, will present a section on grass-roots interaction with legislators. Boddicker
was floor manager of a recent bill that made mercury in childhood vaccines illegal. The bill was the first of its
kind in the nation.
"People should come to understand that they need to become active to ensure access to the health care they
choose to have," Hanus said.
Participants will have the opportunity to pick from several workshop sessions, including energy technologies,
aromatherapy, Ayurveda techniques and homeopathy.
Registration is $15 and if received by July 25, the fee includes a lunch of chicken or vegeable. Registration at
the door, which is $ 15 does not include lunch. To pre-register, send your name, address, phone number,
e-mail and lunch choice, along with a check or money order to Iowa Health Freedom Coalition, 1239 41st St.,
Des Moines, IA, 50311. For more information log on to www.IowaHealthFreedom.org, or call Hanus at

The expo is also searching for vendors to present material at booths throughout the day. The $40 fee includes
